Two of China’s initiatives selected as global health action cases at COP30

Recently, at the 30th Conference of the Parties (COP30) to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC), the case of Tianjin’s “High-Temperature Health Action” and the case of Zunyi City, Guizhou’s “Capacity Building for Early Warnings of Climate-Sensitive Diseases” were selected as global cases for the “Belém Health Action Library”.

In July and November this year, the Tianjin Municipal Meteorological Service, in conjunction with the Municipal Disease Control and Prevention Bureau, successively released high-temperature health risk warnings and cold wave health risk warnings, forming a service model of “risk warning + science popularization tips”. As a national pilot for high-quality development in health meteorology, Tianjin’s meteorological departments have jointly established a Health Meteorology Cross-Innovation Center with hospitals, universities, and other institutions. They have carried out research on the health effects of meteorology and the environment on populations, as well as the development of disease meteorological risk forecasting and early warning technologies and service products. They have also set up a Meteorology-Traditional Chinese Medicine Research Center with Tianjin University of Traditional Chinese Medicine and the National Supercomputer Center in Tianjin.

Currently, Tianjin’s health risk products have been integrated into the MAZU platform of the China Meteorological Administration (CMA) for the United Nations’ Early Warnings for all (EW4All), which is part of China’s joint action for EW4All, delivering real-time global sharing services.

In February this year, the Zunyi Municipal Government issued an implementation plan for climate change health adaptation actions, establishing a full-chain collaboration mechanism of “meteorological monitoring – risk assessment – early warning services”. Leveraging its technological advantages, Zunyi Meteorological Department has provided multi-element monitoring data and forecasting products to support the construction and operation of a comprehensive analysis platform for “climate-health”. It conducts regular consultations with local disease control and health authorities, jointly assessing the risks of diseases such as cardiovascular and cerebrovascular conditions before extreme weather events and issuing joint early warning information. Additionally, it has innovatively launched science popularization live broadcasts and other initiatives.
